Senior Account Lead Rosie Presents on the Art of Pitching
Public relations is more of an art than a science. As public relations professionals, we spend our time absorbing the news, studying trends and thinking of creative ways to get our clients involved – this is where pitching comes into play.
At All Points PR, the majority of our time is dedicated to interacting with members of the press. Whether we are phone or emailing pitching, we know that the words we use in correspondence are extremely important.
Senior Account Lead Rosie Gillam led the February team seminar about the art of creating pitches. As Rosie reinforced, it’s important to keep in mind that as reporters are reading and listening to our pitches, they are thinking about what it offers them. This means that when constructing pitches, we need to keep the focus on the story and why it would interest a reporter’s readers.
Rosie also stressed the value of sincerity in pitches. All too often, public relations professionals start emails off with generic opening lines or false tales of being an avid reader of a certain column. Instead, publicists should take a few minutes to actually read some of the reporter’s recent articles and create a relevant and interesting pitch that grabs his or her attention.
This month’s seminar helped to remind the team about the importance of staying up-to-date on the news of the day, being creative and concise in communication and taking the extra step needed to impress the reporter.
Stay tuned for next month’s seminar!
